pardon ? apm I could understand, what does smp have to do with auto-power
off ? Am I missing something ? My laptop works fine with apmd & the kernel
apm support. No smp.

Yes, you need a kernel with SMP support for that. You can install this
kernel image ("laptop") using YaST.
