Mike,
Thanks for the back up. The reason I got on that rant was because I was trying to view a Rational Rose tutorial CD. I had to boot into NT to get the *.exe to run. It ran fine on my system at work, unfortunately it crashes on my NT here at home. I would rather have it run on my Linux boot. As for tools I like:
http://www.textpad.com/ http://www.ultraedit.com/ Many gadgets that come with hardware such as sound cards, and digital cameras.
The list is not extensive, but it's long enough to frustrate me. I'm sure there are other packages that belong on this list, my first cup of coffee hasn't kicked in yet, so I'm drawing a blank. Some people will tell me there are OSS tools that do the same things. Indeed there are, but they never seem to give me exactly what I'm looking for. For example, xemacs will do virtually anything, but it is in a paradigm of its own. The learning curve is steeper than most programming languages, and even when you learn what it can do, it doesn't support the same key strokes and etc. that I am used to. kwrite is getting there, but it is still a bit weak.
Another problem is that sometimes I'm forced to use Win32 products because of my job. I would really like to be able to just stick in a CD and have at it.
Steve

I don't mean to detract from your excellent plea . . .

I have lots of cool tools I use in NT that just aren't available to me in Unix/Linux.
Could you name just one or two? Are these MS-provided tools, or something else? These are the programs on my system that I haven't found replacements for yet
Realia COBOL Fujitsu COBOL Palm Desktop Lego Mindstorms Swift FORTH
Myst/Riven
Canadian Securities self-study Software ForeFront CBT courses Multimedia Apps - Corel Draw Compton's, Grolliers or Encarta encyclopedia
Reading Rabbit... children's educational software I install these for a local school.
I'd like to start developing these CBT's or educational software but coming from a mainframe COBOL shop I'm not even sure where to start.

My mistake. I thought "tools" as in system/network admin tools, vice applications and games.
