I notice that my pcmcia card is stealing irq 5 which is needed for my sound. If I leave the card out, still no joy. This still does not explain the lost /devs. I guess I will put 6.2 back on and then do an up-grade and see what happens. 6.2 worked. Adrian Burd wrote:

Sadly, it didn't. Tonight I'm going to look back at the kernel config files for 6.2 (for which the CD-ROM worked fine with audio) to see if I can use kernel 2.2.10 (the one that came with 6.2) with Suse 6.3. THen it should be a case of comparing the kernel config files between the two cases to find out what's missing or going wrong.
I have to admit that this is annoying me considerably. I moved from Redhat to Suse about 2 years ago (when Suse 5.2 came out) and I've upgraded at every release since then without a hitch. This is the first one that has caused problems. What's more irksome is that I sent a request to the Suse support (I'm registered) last month and have as yet only received an automated response. I'm quite disappointed.
Tune in for the next exciting episode.....
