It seems that this is a problem that affects only a few systems. So far I've not found a solution, but strongly suspect that Suse (or someonelse) has messed up on the kernel configuration. On delving deeper I discovered (with the help of someone more knowledgeable about such things as I) that I was getting ioctl errors and when these were deciphered we discovered that this was because something that should have been in the kernel was not. I'll be downloading 2.2.14 and compiling it tonight - you might want to try the same. As an aside, many thanks to those who pitched in with suggestions - sadly none of them solved the problem but hopefully the new kernel will.
