Hi, You are looking at the wrong end. Its not Apache or Linux itself but the filesystem you are using. Ext2fs is case sensitive, NTFS is case-aware. The solution would be to lowercase every filename, which you pointed out is not feasable. Other possible solution is to use FAT32 partition to store your web pages. One more distant way is to hack ext2fs and make it case-aware, not case sensitive. But that might break other things in other places. Any more ideas from anyone? Thanks for listening. I received this plea for help:
Our main web server is running NT with IIS. We decided to put up the Linux server as a backup, meaning that we want to replicate all of the Web pages from NT to Linux. So, when the NT server goes offline, we can change the IP address of the Linux box and no one is ever the wiser.
Everything seemed to go just fine: we set up Linux, got FTP and Apache running, and moved the files over. That's when the problem became apparent. NT/IIS is NOT case-sensitive, Linux/Apache IS case sensitive, hence, Web pages malfunction when the HTML references don't match the file names (because of capitalization differences). Some web pages and images won't load.
The obvious solution is to go to the Web page authors and tell them to mind their filenames' capitalization. However, I'm dealing with university faculty members who probably won't want do this.
Do you know of any web servers for Linux that are not case sensitive? Do you know how to make Apache not case sensitive? Got any ideas on what I can do here?
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix the bad effects of Microsoft's disregard for filename capitalization?
