In the section of Yast that configures partitions, there are several choices for the partition types. In version 1.01.3 of Yast, at least, they don't work correctly with Windows 98. The extended type provided by Yast is 5 and the Fat16 type is 6. If you do partitioning using the Win98 fdisk, however, the extended type is f and the Fat16 type is e (for a large LBA disk, anyway, which is what most people are using). It does make a difference. If you partition using Yast's types, Windows misinterprets Linux type 83 partitions as being Windows partitions. Not good at all. Yast really should provide the same types that Windows does. In addition it should provide type b (Win95 Fat32) for vfat partitions. I spent several hours unsuccessfully trying to partition a disk using Linux fdisk; Windows always got confused. I finally let Windows create all the partitions and then went in with Linux fdisk and changed the ones I wanted for Linux to type 83.
