I've retrieved the newest version of the tcl package (but it could be any package) from its website. The package is in the form of a tarball (a .tgz file). I'm not expecting any particular problems in installing it. However, older versions of tcl are also part of the SuSE distribution. I'm interested in opinions on the best way to install the tarball so that I can update it in the future with newer SuSE distributions. The problem is how to get everything coordinated, since Yast and its package records don't know about the files that come from the tarball. This is really a very general problem: how to integrate packages from SuSE and from other sources so that updates always work smoothly. I'm looking for a good strategy.
