we are currently evaluating the possibility of using a 2.88 MB boot image on our installation CDs instead of the 1.44 image. It seems to work fine on most machines that we tested so far, however we would like to get some more feedback from you about this. So I would like to encourage everyone with a little time on his hands an the possibility to burn CDs to do a little testing for us :)
We have a very small ISO image on ftp.suse.com, which contains not more than the boot image of linuxrc. It is available from here:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/fastboot.iso.gz (2.6 MB)
Deompress it and burn it on a CD-R. Now try to boot from this CD. I would appreciate, if you can send me your experiences with it. Please mail it to me personally, not to the list. Please send it with the subject [CD-TEST], so I can quickly sort them out. I need to know, what hardware you have tested it on (Mainboard, CPU, BIOS, Memory, SCSI/IDE, CD-ROM vendor and model) and if it booted successfully (linuxrc will be started) or not (system hangs or an error message appears). Please note, that I will likely not be able to answer any questions or send personal replys to you about this.
Thanks in advance for your contribution! We really appreciate your feedback on this.
Thanks a lot to everyone who responded so far. It looks pretty promising - so far we only had a few people who had trouble with it. Those will be able to boot from the second CD.
