All I can say is that I didn't get this error. Maybe one of the list's gurus can help. This stuff can sure be a time sump! All I wanted to do what add a font to SO. I guess this is what SuSE means when they say "Have a lot of fun." :-) On Sat, 22 Jan 2000, you wrote:

This is pretty much what I did. Run configure untill it worked, which required installing some other packages, but not as many as it appears you'll need. autoconf and automake are on the SuSE CD. I must have installed them for some other reason.
Hmmm. I did need to install autoconf and autoheader. All the `missing' complaints disappeared, but I still get the complaint that (c++ -O2) doesn't work and that the compiler can't create executables. What's particularly odd is that when I type `c++ -O2' on a command line, it's accepted (though there's of course a complaint that there are no input files).
I must say that one of the irksome things about Gnu/Linux sometimes is that you get slammed by these system components you know little or much about, and the error messages assume you're an expert on them. On the other hand, Windows does the same thing.

Did u install t1lib before installing gfontview? Did you manage to set up t1lib? I had a bit of trouble doin this.
I couldn't even get started, alas. I picked up gfontview-0.3.2 from metalab.unc.edu, unpacked it, and did a ./configure according to the installation instructions. What I got was:
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking whether make sets ${make}... yes checking for working aclocal... missing checking for working autoconf... missing checking for working automake... missing checking for working autoheader... missing checking for working makeinfo... found checking for c++... c++ checking whether the C++ compiler (c++O2 ) works... no configure: error installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables
