Execute /usr/sbin/logrotate -d /etc/logrotate.conf and see what goes wrong. You can ignore messages from gzip like "couldn't find file" - they are shown because "-d" actually does nothing, just creates debug output, so gzip cannot find files to compress.

That's okay. Syslog has not dropped anything. That should be fine.
