But...is it possible to do the thing I did? I mean: is possible to download a package from Suse 8.1 and installing it into my 7.3 ?
The binary packages: mostly no 8.1 uses a newer glibc than 7.3 - and the glibc ist mostly forward-compatible, but not backwards. (means you can use a binary compiled on an older glibc, but not on a newer) But most of the time it's possible to recompile the 8.1 source-rpms under older suse versions - but this depends on a lot of things and needs sometimes some tweaking of the spec-files.
Otherwise how can I update my packeges without buying for the 3rd time the SuSE distribution? :)
It should be possible to update the whole distribution from the ftp-server, but remember that even suse needs some money to do its good work. c'ya sven -- The Internet treats censorship as a routing problem, and routes around it. (John Gilmore on http://www.cygnus.com/~gnu/)
