There are scripts to generate a new root.hint-file via dig. I found a script I now run monthly via cron. The main interesting line is: dig @E.ROOT-SERVERS.NET . ns >root.hints.new 2>&1 Even if the IP of the one root name server changes it is reachable under the old address for a while. Though I did not create/ event that script (I only found it some years ago the first time I set up a bind DNS) I may mail it or even post it (it has only 60 lines). Maybe SuSE could integrate such a script in there bind-packet?! -- Eat, sleep and go running, David Huecking. Encrypted eMail welcome! Just a small thing to remember for the next bind-packages:
J.ROOT-SERVERS.NET has changed its IP-Address from 198.41.0.10 to 192.58.128.30, so the root.hint-file should be updated:
check_hints: A records for J.ROOT-SERVERS.NET class 1 do not match hint records
