I'm triying to start up vpn's with ipsec on suse7.2. I've readed the documentation from FreeSWan about soft and kernel-options requiered and before to install FreeSWan I allways got a system without compile errors or problems (first, system Ok, second try to install IPSec).
I got the nexts configurations and allways with the same error: * Suse 7.2-2.4.4 + FreeSWan 1.90 (from rpm on installation CD with ipip on the kernel-option=M and Y) * Suse 7.2 with kernel 2.4.14 and FreeSWan 1.93 (from web , file tar.bz2) as suggested in the On-Line documentation * Suse 7.2 with kernel 2.4.17 and FreeSWan 1.94 (from web , file tar.bz2)
That's the error that I allways got: ipsec_setup: Starting FreeS/WAN IPsec 1.9X... ipsec_setup: modprobe: Can't locate module ipsec ipsec_setup: Fatal error, kernel appears to lack KLIPS. Cannot continue IPsec startup.
Ipsec comes as kernel extension/patch. You have to recompile your kernel after installing freeswan. You need to enable the new configuration options ipsec shows you in the kernel setup. cd /usr/src/linux make menuconfig [search and enable ipsec-options] make clean dep bzImage modules modules_install [dont delete actual kernel, just try the new one before] cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/AKERNELNAME [modify /etc/lilo.conf] lilo reboot should work now if there where no probs while compiling kernel Michael Appeldorn
