Problem with your proposed fw-emu would be the demons (mail, web, etc.) running behind it. If you want to implement them as well, uhm... good luck! If not, you're prolly assuming that they're safe, which they aren't in most cases ;)
2 Vmware Systems on one Machine (v1, v2). V1 could be your test-firewall, V2 the vmware workstation/server which you put behind you virtual firewall.
good idea. But a little IP aliasing would do the trick also, and would be not as ressource-eatin' as VM. The basic idea was a software solution for a sandbox virtual firewall environment, with the ability to SIMULATE a firewall and a whole net. Hey... think Perl would be of help here... I will pursue that...
