I would like to install a ssh client software on a win2000 system, which is connected through Unix firewall with the internet. The services available are email (read - pop3, send - smtp). Other then that only a proxy for http and ftp through a browser is available. The admin refuse to open the ssh port for security reasons, so I need some information from experts. ;-) SSH can do port forwarding, for example you can forward port 139 of your internal samba fileserver to some other server, making all files available to the world. Would it be possible to just allow outgoing ssh, but to block incoming ssh requests by the firewall, so that ssh won't introduce any new attacing risks? yes, but this doesn't solve the above problem. Any other ideas to be able to use ssh outgoing? If you have your own server somewhere, put ssh to port 110 or 25 - if you have direct connection. Otherwise you may use socks over http, but I never tried this. Be sure, you don't get any problems with your admin/boss if you circumvent the firewall.
