Is there are reason 6.4's sendmail/procmail creates the user mail files mode 600? I have a number of programs that expects it to be 640 group-id mail. I am pretty sure earlier 6.x's did it the old way.
Randy, I have 6.3. All the files in /var/spool/mail are mode 0600. I prefer not to have 0640 and I have no problems with the setup.
Man web-based mailers, generaly perl or php3, need to be either suid root or, as it used to be, sgid mail.
Fyi: Most of the web based email systems do not access the mailbox directly but with POP3 or IMAP4. No need to have different access rights than 600 for that reason. Question: are there web based email systems, that access the mailbox directly?
Neomail works fine with redhat/mandrake, as the mail files are 640. It used to work with suse, but not with the current version.
