did you read /usr/doc/packages/netcat and use the -v and -w
echo QUIT | netcat -v -w 5 HOSTNAME 480-514
I get the following output:
HOSTNAME [HOSTNAME-IP] 514 (shell) open HOSTNAME [HOSTNAME-IP] 513 (login) open

I have problems with netcat, possible a bug. When I enter the hostadress and the portrange I want to see, it seems that the programm will do something but I get no result.
We have tested that on different suseversions. What can be the problem?
