The way I currently see this working is something like this..

openSUSE $NewVersion.1 - Based on SLE 12 SP1 - Theoretical Release
Q4 this year

openSUSE $NewVersion.2 - Based on SLE 12 SP2 - Theoretical Release
Q4 2016 Support for openSUSE $NewVersion.1 ends 6 months later (in
line with SLE 12 SP1)

openSUSE $NewVersion.3 - Based on SLE 12 SP3 - Theoretical Release
Q4 2017 Support for openSUSE $NewVersion.2 ends 6 months later (in
line SLE 12 SP2)

openSUSE $NewVersion+1.0 - Based on SLE 13 - Theoretical Release Q4
2018 ... What do you think?

I think you could make the concerns about moving 'forward' to an older
kernel moot, by trying to get back on track with SLE versions.

$NewVersion.1 -> 12.4
$NewVersion.2 -> 12.5
$NewVersion.3 -> 12.6

$NewVersion+1.0 -> 13.3

By 14.0 it'll sort itself out :P
