How to add a new feature to KMail

Hello, I'm Massimiliano, an italian SuSE user. I wish to add a new feature to KMail (when I click over a message I don't want that the program changes the message status to "read"). How to do it? I have downloaded kdenetwork's source tree from kde.org, and I wish to use KDevelop to do it, but I don't know the right sequence to start. Can anyone help me?
