First of all George, just one email to the list please! There is no need to send me a copy as well, I'm on the list, so one will suffice. I could make an Apple user joke here, but you might misconstrue that as being rude and that's not my intention.
My bad. I have a habit of just hitting "reply to all" and not thinking what list I'm on. Some want separate ones, some don't. And for the mac jokes, hey, lets hear them. ;)
The hardware coming from the clone makers during that period were no less reliable or worse than what was coming from Apple. The clones had already started a nice increase in Apple rom based computers, so you can't say it was a bad thing! Increased Apple sales, better OS, after 10 that is, and better hardware in the end with some standards being produced. Now obviously you are an Apple computer person and I respect that, but be reasonable. The only reason Apple is doing anything right now financially is the iPod and accessories, because their computer sales suck! From your last few sentences, you sound like you are pulling words right out of Jobs' mouth! That has always been his thoughts as well and one of the big reasons Mac computers have always been so pricey. Apple would have never had to support clone hardware, only their OS running on that hardware. Did you ever hear of Windows having to support all clone makers? Or LinuxOS or BeOS or... Your statement is just not reasonable.
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,39020351,39195066,00.htm mac sales were up 40%. I've owned or worked on every (I think) clone made. I can't tell you how many times I would call apple, just to be told it's a hardware issue and to call umax, and they say to call the makers of harddrive tool kit (if you owned a umax, you know why I say that, and then they say to call apple. That was total BS. And no, it wasn't only umax. They all had issues. Hell, I had three Umax S900's that everything was replaced in each one except the plastic case. Some of the items were replaced up to four times. I mean, come on, how many times can you replace a mother board, ram, drives power supply, etc. and this was a guy that just got into the front end of printing coming from a IBM sales background. That went ever real well! (not) We also had similar issues with (now I will say I own a S900 now that runs very well under OS9. It isn't one of that other three...I quit that h*ll hole. I also have an old Radius 81/110. We use it as a ftp box. Runs fine now that I replaced a bunch of stuff in it after it was new. Had a Power Computing box... I can't remember what the exact issues were on that but it was down more than up. The clone hardware sucks. Believe me.) My point is the hardware from apple IS more reliable. And no, I don't work for them and yes I do tend to hate some of the crap they pull on their customers. Sometimes they can be like Quark or Intuit as far as customer relations. (suck)
I doubt very much that Steve Jobs got pissed off at either Motorola or IBM, but rather got a lot of incentive from Intel to make the move. Read some of the articles on the web about this move.
Well, he did lose face when he said they would have a 3gig G5 and they didn't. And do you really think he didn't put IBM against Moto when it came to who would supply him chips? I know I would have...
It also indicates that Apple was never a hardware company, but a software company, else they would have the good sense to continue with PPC! I don't really wish them ill by going to Intel, but I do consider it a bad move on their part, as they are going to have to make OS10.x look awfully attractive for folks to start using it, when Linux is an overall better, faster system and free to boot!
I also think it isn't the best idea to drop the PPC chip and go Intel. No argument there. For Linux as a comparison...they have a different market from my point of view. In printing and design, the industry uses macs. I would like to have Quark and Adobe make some of their stuff run on Linux, but that's a fat chance. Same thing with RIP's. I have only seen Harlequin and Rampage RIP's run on winblows or mac. And what about color correction? Have you ever tried to calibrate a monitor in Linux? Call Tobias or Xrite and say the word Linux and see how long the conversation lasts. Visit the colorsync list on apple's site and you will see that no one has gotten any decent color calibration form a Linux monitor. Again, I like Linux for servers and tinkering...( I have done a few simple web site designs on 9.1 and YDL just to see if I could) along with end user web and email use. I like the speed. OSX is getting to be a resource pig! I can put linux on a box that has half the ram and it runs as fast or faster... Now, once you don't use the GUI, I think it would be close if not faster... The gui apple has is getting too fat. However, it works cleaner than any Linux I've seen. However, I don't have $500 video cards...I don't think I could ever bring my self to spend that much on such a thing. (so no, I don't do gaming)
regards, Rusty
But in general, how can you say that they aren't a hardware company. Who else designs computers like the imac, of mini? Who designed the ipod? Sure wasn't M$. And note I didn't say anything on the cube. We have a Cobalt Qube. ;) They must be doing something right- http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/10/11/appleprofit/index.php -- Thanks, George ``One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas.
