Hello! I just bought a Orinoco pcmcia card (http://www.proxim.com/products/wifi/client/11bgpccard/) cause i read that its supported by the kernel. However, when i plug it in, lspci tells me that its an unkown ethernet device.
Hi Mario, some time ago I had to install some laptops with wireless pcmcia cards, our computing center recommended the Proxim ORiNOCO cards because they were supported directly by the Linux kernel. Nevertheless I had to find out the hard way that this wasn't the case anymore (they seem to use the Agere chipset ??). At least on the back of the card is a small notice about "Agere Systems" and they work well with the Linux drivers provided by Agere :-) The pcmcia cards weren't exactly the same than yours, but maybe this can help you nevertheless. I will try to remember and summarise what I did: - To install the Proxim ORiNOCO 802.11b PC Card (Silver) on the Linux laptops I downloaded the Agere drivers (at that moment it was 'wl_lkm_714') at http://www.agere.com/support/drivers/ as well as the pcmcia sources at http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ - I untared the pcmcia sources into a directory and then the Agere drivers into the same directory as the pcmcia sources. - I read the 'README.wlags49' file ;-) - ./Configure giving the path to the linux sources and giving the default answers for everything else (if I remember well) - ./Build - and finally as root: ./Install After these steps I plugged in the card and it was recognised and I just had to configure the network. Hope that helps. If you need more info, I can undoubtedly dig up more memories ;-) Cheers, Volker --- Volker Flegel Institut Suisse de Bioinformatique Vital IT Group BEP-UNIL CH-1015 Lausanne - Dorigny Switzerland
