You are aware that you need to disable any acpi daemons in order to read /proc/acpi/event (for SuSE 9.1, you probably need to do # rcpowersaved stop). But if you really do not get any event when you press the button, perhaps the laptop does not fully support acpi, in which case you will need to use apm. I have looked on tuxmobil.org linux-laptop.net but no-one has submitted an entry for the X30 model. For my own case I have sometimes found help by reading the postings on different models from the same brand.
