Hi James,
Thanks for the quick response on IRC. I had just gotten IRC set up on
the netbook when you appeared.
The information you gave makes the following even more appropriate.
Here's what I sent to the Fest Organizers yesterday...
" In several volunteer assignment categories, there is a question about
which distro to use. The time that students could spend researching
distros and debating their merits could be put to better use
elsewhere.
In a message to his student assistants, Jakob wrote:
"I personally like OpenSUSE and Gnome desktop, but it's your call."
On Monday, I am going to instruct students to use OpenSUSE/Gnome.
(Fred, this doesn't apply to the Tutorium. That's your call.)
Rationale:
* BTC students are not generally knowledgeable about distros and their
relative advantages to Jane Citizen, average user.
* OpenSUSE/Gnome is easy to use, solid and visually appealing. (Gak,
what about KDE? Try not to think about it B^)
* OpenSUSE is a sponsor.
* OpenSUSE is an exhibitor.
* Several senior level speakers represent OpenSUSE.
* James Mason provides local presence, support and advocacy.
* The installation media is well-designed and attractive.
* OpenSUSE has superb online references.
* Installation, updates, package installation are simple, and well
supported by the online references.
* All of these reflect well on LFNW.
