As far as I can see, discussions here seem to be devided into 3 topics so far. # #-lines are my opinions and thoughts. 1) What time is mutually convenient for Weekly News Team meetings? * Do we need regular meetings? * What time is better for most of us? * Are there any other good places, where much more persons can join discussions without any geographic or time constraints? # Those can/should be discussed and settled by Weekly News Team # members. 2) How can we improve openSUSE Weekly News? * What is the goal, purpose, role of openSUSE Weekly News? For whom we should edit and publish OWN? -- Main English newsletter -- Translations # If we don't have consensus on above things, the further # discussions will be confused. # The role of main EN newsletter and translations is a little bit # different. Translations are for the people who are not good at # reading English. All the important announcements on openSUSE # project/community can be read on news.o.o, lizards.o.o and in # appropriate mailing lists. However, most of them are only in # English. If we don't translate such important announcements, how # people who don't usually read Planet SUSE can know upcoming power # outage, server maintenance, change of repository trees, etc.? # That's one of the main reasons why I translate OWN into Japanese. # On the other hand, for most Japanese, call for help to the booth # in FLISOL (Nicaragua) or Chemnitzer Linux-Tage (Germany) might not # be a matter of deep interest (... Reports from those events must # be interesting stories, though ;-)). # Therefore, contents in original EN newsletter and translations can # be variant. If the # original article is on news.o.o, lizards.o.o or *@opensuse.org # mailing list archive, whole text can be quoted, if needed. * Format / Look and Feel -- New corners? --- Reports from developers/packagers --- Corner to introduce Non-English articles # How about making Ambassadors corner, where we can gather up # reports from Ambassadors all over the world about their local # communities. The point is, we ask Ambassadors to post their local # news and reports such as local events, hot topics in their # localized mailing lists or Planet and so on to -marketing list. It # is not necessarily the original articles to be written in English. # Ambassadors will make a short summary about the topic in English, # like Carl does in "openSUSE Forums" corner, and post it. -- Artwork inprovement * Framework(Infrastructure?) -- Is wiki a good place to publish OWN? --- How about using CMS like Pligg? --Javier * Release announcement -- Much more informations have to be included? 3) Integrate "People of openSUSE" into OWN? * Custom-tailored interviews might be more interesting than stereotyped interviews. -- Who can be an interviewer? Please note, if we enrich and make OWN more attractive, that will increase editors/translators burdens. The work has to be continuable and - never forget! - fun!
