I updated IPAGothic & co fonts to the newer version 003.02 on OBS M17N project. Let me know if any problem occurs with this update. This will be submitted to FACTORY later if no regression is found.
Thanks for doing this.
The problem is, that the look and feel of those newer fonts are different from that of older ones. Newer fonts are a little bit thinner than old ones and to be honest, I don't like them. :-(
Please look at some screenshots for example:

The difference between 003.01 and 003.02 is distinguished on Kate. In addition, I've taken a screenshot of this Thunderbird window (UTF-8 encoding).

You might agree that this is strange-looking and I can't see 'underlines' in above URLs - 'underlines' and 'spaces' are not discernible to the eye.
Several months ago, I built Takao-fonts packages which are based on version 003.02 of IPA fonts on my home project. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=takao-fonts&project=home%3AHeliosReds I encountered the similar problem with those fonts and I gave up submitting a request to M17N.
Is there any way to solve this problem ?
These are definitely due to hinting setup. I personally prefer with hinting, but I agree that this often deforms glyph forms too badly. Try to put the following in ~/.fonts.conf: ================================================================ <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "/etc/fonts/fonts.dtd"> <fontconfig> <match target="font"> <test name="family"> <string>IPAexGothic</string> <string>IPAexMincho</string> <string>IPAMincho</string> <string>IPAGothic</string> <string>IPAPMincho</string> <string>IPAPGothic</string> </test> <edit name="hinting"> <bool>false</bool> </edit> </match> </fontconfig> ================================================================ This will disable hinting for the specified fonts. If this works better, we can put the rule into the package. thanks, Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+help@opensuse.org
