What does this option do on its own? Don't we need any of the below new options as well? In particular, is there any boo# or list report that something is not working, or is this just about config harmonization?
The media controller API is relevant for any devices when there no longer is a simple tree hierarchy, but system components are managed by different subsystems. A simple example are webcams, which are managed by both Alsa and V4L, settop box/phone SoCs are another typical use case. See also:

Maybe MEDIA_CONTROLLER_DVB should also be enabled, but for all archs then (at least x86, ARM).
Currently, its only harmonization.
