despite removing everything KDEPIM and akonadi-related on this machine, I still get an error dialogue on every login:

The machine has been up for 21 days. Would an old-fashioned, Windows-style reboot get rid of it? (which would mean stopping another user's currently running scripts, which is why I haven't tried it yet).
If akonadi_kcal_resource is segfaulting and it has been is uninstalled, there should be no binary there to restart on login. Check whether kdepim4-runtime is still installed. Also check that you haven't got any hand-built kdepim stuff in your PATH (unlikely given that you're ripping it out now, but I like to be thorough).
