I'm using Kmail to read my mail from an IMAP account. I have Kmail installed on my desktop, which runs 24/7, and on my laptop, which is on intermittently. When the laptop comes online, I see multiple copies of messages appearing in the desktop inbox. When the laptop disconnects, they disappear, leaving only one copy of each message. My HTC Android phone never shows any duplicate copies, so I think it is some sort of interaction between the two running instances of Kmail.
