I'm a little worried about mixing KDE4&3 in the same os. I've seen some horror stories on these lists when people do that. I don't need any hassle anymore, especially with my sight problem.
Been a while since I've seen any of those stories.
I don't know how to do a minimal x install and then add KDE.
Minimal X is a standard option early in openSUSE installation. Where you get the three choices screen with Gnome, KDE & Other, choose other, then minimal X, then proceed normally as if you had chosen KDE. You shouldn't need to do another install now. Just use the 11.4 you already have by using zypper to remove your KDE4 packages if you don't want both 3 & 4 on the same system. After installation is complete or you've done your KDE4 removal, boot 11.3 (if you find it easier) and copy the KDE3.repo file from one of the mirrors to the 11.4 /etc/zypp/repos.d/ dir. Then boot back into runlevel 3 in 11.4, do 'zypper ref' (if fresh install), then use 'zypper in' on at least the following packages (that I now have installed on the 11.4 system I did yesterday): kde-susetranslations kde3-kcm_gtk kde3-kio_sysinfo kdeaccessibility3 kdeaddons3-kicker kdeaddons3-konqueror kdeadmin3 kdebase3 kdebase3-SuSE kdebase3-SuSE-lang kdebase3-apps kdebase3-kdm kdebase3-nsplugin kdebase3-runtime kdebase3-session kdebase3-workspace kdegraphics3 kdelibs3 kdelibs3-default-style kdemultimedia3-mixer kdeutils3 Those and the deps they pull should be enough that you can get into runlevel 5 using KDM3 after you've updated /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager to use KDE3 instead of KDE4. From there you can use YaST2 to get the rest of whatever of KDE3 you need. Another option involves updating 11.4 while booted to 11.2 or 11.3 via the chroot process often used for repairs. That way you could update 11.4 on a tty (or even in root Konsole tab for that matter) in the background while still having KDE3 running in the foreground.
Is there a how-to floating around somewhere?
There may be. You could try Google. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg.
