I tried deleting those files, and even all of ~/.kde4, and even making a new user ID just for testing, so KDE would create the new .kde files in ~, but I always get this hang. It's really frustrating, as this machine has been working with this NVidia / KDE combination for a long time. Further, the laptop I'm writing this email on is running KDE 4.6.4 and NVidia 270.41.06 quite happily...?
I just don't understand what's going on.
Did you try the "failsafe KDE/Plasma" session under "Session Type" at KDM (the kde login-screen). Or else try manually editing ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc to disable compositing.
