(cc coolo as I don't know if he is subscribed/reads -kde) http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2011-02/msg00232.html is a useful root for the 4.6.(0|1) discussion that just started. Am Donnerstag, 17. Februar 2011, 17:22:45 schrieb Sebastian Kügler:

The timing is a bit of a bummer, 4.6.1 releases on 1st of march while opensuse 11.4 goldmaster ist on 3rd, and with the track record of not only including bugfixes in point releases I can atleast understand coolos decision.
Would be good to communicate that to the release team. My impression was that we (as in upstream KDE) have been pretty disciplined in including only bugfixes, and therefore making the point releases more suitable for downstream updates.
That's the plan yes, but sometimes they also had bugs that weren't there before, I can't remember specifics, but I do remember point updates sometimes having unpleasent consquences, no show stoppers though. h
If that's not the case, we might as well not ship .1 versions and just ask all distros to cherry-pick their updates from master. That won't make anybody happy.
openSUSE usually does not take upstreams point updates after release anyways, there was an exception for KDE4.3 where an SLE service pack was going to ship with a more recent version, I actually liked how that turned out, maybe Bille can comment a bit on the extra work this caused, if possible.
Especially for 4.6.1, there's such a large number of fixes in, that basically 11.4 is _already_ outdated if we don't ship 4.6.1.
I agree, there is alot of bkos mentioned in the commits and .0 to .1 is propably worth it, but the by current policy it is not an intended step this late in the release cycle and somehow this got overlooked, so we have to deal with the consequences. This can be begging coolo for an exception and maybe risking some last minute release delay or fixing the fallout later, with maybe bad press for the reviews. If we need another strategy to handle kde updates I suggest waiting a few weeks because right now 11.4 is on the plate and closing in fast. Am Donnerstag, 17. Is there a way to get a list of all bug numbers that have been fixed since 4.6.0 came out? I would be happy to feed them one by one into bnc just to make sure nobody could not have noticed that it is impossible for Will to do all the work of cherry picking from all those and backporting them + taking care of the zypp backend + taking care of knm etc. pp. and a waste of time compared to a branch update.
It's a bit more complicated since the migration to git there is no single repo with a single 4.6 branch anymore Take these as an example: http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kde-workspace.git&a=log&h=refs/heads/KDE/4.6 http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kde-runtime.git&a=log&h=refs/heads/KDE/4.6 http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kdelibs.git&a=log&h=refs/heads/KDE/4.6 The bug descriptions often contain the bko# they fix Cheers, Karsten -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
