ATM, gnome-settings-daemon is not running here. I'll bet it doesn't start by itself there either, but gets started if you open gnome-control-center, after which your GTK fonts enlarge. -- That iscorrect. I must open gnome-control-center and click on 'appearance' to have the GTK font settings work. So how do we make it start at start-up?
