ah, the issue is that you're on 10.3 or older and you didn't add KDE:KDE3 buildservice respository for updating your KDE3 to a state where it doesn't conflict with KDE4. It is unfortunate that your package installer didn't warn you of the file conflicts.
Those things are all fixed with 11.0, but for older distros you must upgrade to the newer kde3 packages provided via the buildservice repository otherwise installing kde4 will indeed shredder your kde3 installation due to kde4 overwriting files vital files of kde3.
adding the KDE:KDE3 repository will repair things again.
Hello Dirk, Is this the right repository? download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.3/ If so,Yast seems to be ignoring it. I also have a kde3 update repository.
