Try the "file" command on the mp3-files, both one that works and one that doesn't, and look for differences.
Next, KAudioCreator uses cdparanoia and lame. The exact commands are fully specifiable in the KAudioCreator options, so you should have absolutely no problems in getting KAudioCreator to make exactly the kind of mp3:s you need.

Hi, This is truly a Doh! moment and I offer my humble apologies to the list. After much head scratching and checking both sets of files, I found that for some reason, the encoder was not adding the extension .mp3 to the file, so of course Amarok or Xmms did not know what to do with it and just gave up. Once the extension was added there was no further problem. Why should Realplayer standalone play the file though? Further to Lennarts' reply, I can find nowhere to check if CDParanoia is enabled, but this is irrelevent now. Many thanks to Lennart and Frans for their replies, and a lesson has been learned the hard way. Check everything!! Ian
