Is there a way to set up buttons or icons on the desktop or kde that will allow you to switch to the virtual console of your choice, by clicking on the button or icon? Why? For that odd occasion when one loses keyboard control but still have some response via the mouse.
You can use the command "chvt <number>", but since you have to have root rights to use this, it's not possible to use this as program link on the desktop.

Thanks all for the replies. I've not had any problems recently but I think I can recall a couple of times when I've have problems with the keyboard in KDE and when I've managed to get a console (by remotely killing the xserver, if I remember correctly) then I've been able to use the keyboard. I am able to use an icon with "chvt 2" set to run as root. However, it brings up a window so I still need to type in the root password. There is a box to check which say "keep password" but it still prompts for a password, so I guess it doesn't store the password (which I suppose it a good thing anyway). Thanks again for the replies. It was question borne out of curiosity more than need or desperation. Eddie
