At the beginning, the QT packages for KDE were built with Xft support. But many people complained about the errors with Xfree < 4.2. And they didn't accept the prerequisite of updating XFree first. Thanks; this makes sense to me now. And I have my AA fonts back, anyway ;-) -- SuSE 7.2 with KDE3.1.1a and XFree 4.3 now! I'm amazed I got it all working... And before anyone asks, I'm out of a job at the moment and at the end of a 56k modem, otherwise I _would_ update to SuSE 8.x! It's a dangerous place to be, having lots of free time to fiddle with stuff and no money coming in: you end up with a system that's not like anyone else's...
My suggestion is to fetch the QT src.rpm from kde.org: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.1.1a/SuSE/src/qt3-3.1.2-0.src.rpm [*snip*]
Thanks, Daniel. I'll save this mail off and probably do that for the next time; in the meantime, prompted both by my slow connection for downloads and a tip from someone else on the list, I've just built my own package using "checkinstall", which seems to have worked OK.
