I think the problem is in SuSE's kmail package rather than KDE. I am using kmail version 1.5.9.1i from the Kontact snapshot (which is basically the version in CVS) and have no problems. Also, the kmail in KDE 3.1.1 from the KDE site don't have that problem either.
