My solution (I'm using SuSE 8.1, but had the same problem after upgrading to KDE 3.1.1):
Add the following in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf ServerName localhost
and restart cups.

Thanks Markus, Such a simple thing that fixes an annoying problem. Another fix that worked for me also, suggested by another user, was to switch from the CUPS system to the Generic UNIX lpd system. It still used CUPS for printing and didn't crash kprinter. I prefer your method though and using the full CUPS setup.
