One possibility is that you may actually be running the "SuSEmenu" instead of the "kMenu" . If this is the case then your changes wouldn't be visible.
To check this you can add a kMenu to your panel by right clicking on a blank area of the panel Add -->SpecialButton -->K Menu.
I think, David's idea led me to the right direction. In fact I see in my 'Kmenu' only those entries in the menu, that are located in the 'Suse' subfolder of the menu-tree. I checked this with KMenuedit, where I can see all entries. Clicking on the 'Kmenu' button only shows the SuSE-Subfolder of the tree.
This has to do with an option that usually is available the first time you log in to a new account (during the "Welcome" dialog). After that it is really hard to ever find the option again; and no I don't know where to find the option any more :-(
I did not figure out how to change my SuSEmenu to a plain Kmenu.
Did you try right clicking on the kicker and Add -->SpecialButton -->K Menu If it works then you can just remove the menu you no longer want afterwards.
