Now on LILO I find I have a new feature called Suse Safe Settings. Is this some form of alternate Kernal based on lowest common denominator hardware?
I dont want to test it on either machine until I get a proper install.
Can the remaining disks be mounted/examined on another system, rather
No the same set of disks was tried on two systems. The 8.0 set is
defective. the 7.2 set was not defective. No one beleived the 8.0 set
was bad until I also tested them on my system. It just does not
recognize the 8.0 2,3,4 disks I had to use skip.
It am anxious to try 8 it looks like a serious improvement with the
ability to log in and choose the window manager in real time.

trying an install with them?
The Safe settings use a few more boot options, turning off some features. Not really very safe. You can examine the differences in /etc/lilo.conf . If you make any changes to it, be sure afterward to run lilo, which will write a= new BOOblock (er, bootblock) to the disk.
