Dear All, still me.
Working on X configuration did not help me to find the problem.
I have been also looking in the /var/log/messages file, where I see
this suspicious messages:

Dear Dominique, please disregard my comments about the low activity in the other email, now, I just thought I was doing something wrong by reporting bugs here.
I have to wait until I get home to my multi-user desktop system that I share with my wife to send you the log.
In the meantime I created a dummy user on my computer at work (also running OpenSUSE with GNOME 3.8), and noticed that this does not happen at work. I am alsousing an nvidia card here, but a different one...
However, I am starting to think that it could be X-related....
I will do some more tests this evening and report...
Thank you for your help

: Dear All,
after the upgrade to Gnome 3.8, in my home desktop system I started to notice a serious problem when switching users.
If I log in as a user, then 'Switch User' to allow another user to login, and then switch back to the first user (either by selecting again the 'Switch User' entry in the menu, or going to the correct tty with the keyboard), I see a message saying that something went wrong, that all extensions have been turned off, and offering me to logout (I am not using any extension).
I tried to diagnose the source of the problem, and it seems that GDM is crashing. I see the following messages in /var/log/messages (notice the failed asserts for xdm):
Probably before GDM, there is another thing crashing (a bunch of asserts in gdm are rathyer 'normal', when it shuts down to hand over to the user session.
Can you get the session log of the user (it should be in systemd-journalctl)
