[openFATE 306385] Official realtime kernel
Feature changed by: Jan Engelhardt (jengelh)
Feature #306385, revision 15
Title: Official realtime kernel

openSUSE-11.2: Rejected by Stephan Kulow (coolo)
reject date: 2010-01-21 16:55:53
reject reason: 11.2 is done
Requester: Important

openSUSE-11.3: Rejected by Stephan Kulow (coolo)
reject date: 2010-01-21 16:56:54
reject reason: as long as the upstream kernel sources do not allow to
build a RT kernel unpatched we're not going that route. Maintaining a
working RT kernel is out of scope for openSUSE basic distribution.
Requester: Important

There is no official kernel-rt and kernel-rt-source in main repository
(and main update).
Realtime kernel is very important for audio workers and those, who need
very fast responses.
There are third party packages, but official support for realtime
kernel would be much better.

Please see the openSUSE news article:
People of openSUSE: Jan Engelhardt
it explains why it is not included in openSUSE 11.1.

At the openSUSE Conf 2009, it was mentioned that SUSE focuses rather on
Server RT usage than Desktop RT usage.

Hi Folks, I would like to see official support for a desktop real-time
kernel too. Again, for those of us who which to use suse as a base
system for a digital audio workstation. I'm interested in reviving the
JackLab Audio Distribution after I finish my thesis but for now I'd
like to be able to play around with audio programmes aided by an -rt
kernel. Currently, there is a kernel-rt package for 11.3 in the oss
repo but it is at version 2.6.31, whereas kernel-desktop is at version So I'm thinking that the kernel-rt is unlikely to be a drop-
in replacement here. I've had a look at Jan Engelhardt's good work but
even his latest kernel-rt is at So what to do?
Many thanks to all in advance.

Please, please, please add an official real time kernel to openSUSE
11.3 and the forth coming 11.4.
This is a must for digital audio workstations...

+ #5: Jan Engelhardt (jengelh) (2011-01-10 03:10:31) (reply to #4)
+ And where is the manpower supposed to come from? Given upstream did not
+ produce rt patchsets for >2.6.33 yet, there won't be any rt in 11.4.
