Does not belong here Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Jean-Daniel Dodin (jdd_sysop) Description: openSUSE need a way to be used by non highbandwidth users. Now it's the boxed edition. However, the boxed edition was done for a time where one could buy it on shelves and dealers. Now it's nearly only available through Novell mail order. So the system should be changed. We should now have two packages, soft bound, filled at send time, with 2 options and the choice to take one or the two of them: * the original dvd as now (eventually with the second already existing cd), then with quarterly update cd/dvd * a manual. This manual should be done big as it was, even if it's to be only in english. an option to send the manual by surface mail should be offered With no more packaging, it could be possible to add the last update cd (or an updated dvd). Discussion: #1: Ciaran Farrell (babelworx) (2009-03-10 13:51:52) Maybe it would be a possibility to sell a manual/book with DVD included through Amazon. I'm not sure if this would qualify for free delivery (>= €20 or in book form) or for a lower tax rate (e.g. 7% VAT for books rather than the full rate for CD/DVD etc). I can certainly imagine that Amazon's logistical advantages could be passed on to the project. There may be other companies offering similar publishing deals... #2: Michael Löffler (michl19) (2009-03-20 11:23:52) Yes, the time of the retail box seems to be in the past. In countries with easy broadband access distribution through download is very efficient. Beside of PromoDVDs on request we don't offer any media for countries where broadband access is not that easy. IMO this is something we need a partner for. + #3: Stanley Miller (stan_qaz) (2009-04-30 06:02:55) + I pitched the box once it was opened, the book is on a shelf somewhere + never to bee looked at and someday tossed out when the shelf gets full. + + I'd like to be able to just buy the DVD, the double-layer 8 GB one with + the full software set on it. The single layer 4 GB DVD is fine for + download and testing but not what I want to depend on for a system + setup. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/306172
