Well, denyhosts's last modified is 2008. While fail2ban has arguably the worse home page it's way more maintained upstream.

denyhosts 3.1 beta was released in December 2015. https://github.com/denyhosts/denyhosts/releases But you're right, fail2ban is more maintained.
