However a file ssl-parameters.dat is nowhere to be found. What file is that?

The file is /var/lib/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat

So what you need to do is giving the following command:

dd if=/var/lib/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat bs=1 skip=88 | openssl dhparam -
inform DER > /etc/ssl/private/dh.pem

Note the above should be on one line.

In /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-ssl.conf insert the line (maybe after the line with
ssl_dh_parameters_length = 2048) :
