I'm not sure why this is happening to you. On my system, I get

finger@linux-srm7:~/staging> VirtualBox &
[1] 3062
finger@linux-srm7:~/staging> Qt WARNING: libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile

At this point, the VB GUI is up and running as expected. That Qt WARNING appears to be harmless. The permissions on VB are

finger@linux-srm7:~/staging> ls -l /usr/bin/VirtualBox
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1994 Jul 31 10:32 /usr/bin/VirtualBox

Anything different on your system>

What packages do you have installed? Perhaps I'm missing a file on my host

The 4 critical packages are python-virtualbox, virtualbox, virtualbox-host-kmp-default, and virtualbox-qt. The other virtualbox-* packages are optional or are for openSUSE guests installed in a VM.
