Welcome to the MariaDB monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MariaDB connection id is 6
Server version: 10.1.25-MariaDB openSUSE package
Copyright (c) 2000, 2017, Oracle, MariaDB Corporation Ab and others.
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input
statement.

MariaDB [(none)]> use mysql;
Database changed

MariaDB [mysql]> update user set
password=PASSWORD("Andre@Verwijs1969") where User='root';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
Rows matched: 3 Changed: 0 Warnings: 0

So, your update didn't update anything.

MariaDB [mysql]> SELECT User, Host, HEX(authentication_string) FROM
mysql.user;
+------+------------+-------------------------------------------+
| User | Host | HEX(authentication_string) |
+------+------------+-------------------------------------------+
| root | localhost |

FYI, my mariadb instances all have empty "authentication_string", for
all users.
