As obviously nobody else has the same problem, you need to try to find out what happened. First describe the problem: * root cannot login? * sudo does no longer work? * su does no longer work? Check the timestamps of /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd Do you have a recent backup? Compare the contents of the backuped shadow and the current file. Please share more details about your configuration: * local auth only? * LDAP? * NIS/YP? maybe it is not the root password that has been KILLED!!! but the PAM config could also be broken for whatever reason.
