Are you using grub2 or something else? You need to set which boot loader is used in kdm's config. See the BootManager option in /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc. Grub2 is the default in openSUSE. It works fine here on 42.2 with grub2, both on KDM's greeter and in Plasma1/KDE4 (which I have installed here alongside Plasma5, compiled myself).
