I think one of the specifications of the new design was to not overwhelm new users and also some desktops have more features / functionality and are easier to configure and setup then others and so for Leap at least we should be pointing beginner users to those while still making it not hard for other users to get the desktop they want if they know what it is.
I don't think so. You are implying that a novice should install KDE and not XFCE. Not always so. The novice may have an old computer, so he is directed to choose XFCE or LXDE The novice can also be versed in another Linux distribution, maybe not used to suse patterns. Me, I find both KDE/Gnome very difficult to use desktops. I would not point some newcommers to them as first choice. I think that other desktops should appear either in the first screen or in the second, in one of the many manners suggested here, not as a pattern. For instance, show a small list first. Have a button that says "display all desktops" that then expands the list to all of them. And of course, somehow describe each choice and show pictures. Describe some pros/cons, what are benefits of each choice. You can not say that "XFCE is gtk based, like gnome, but traditional desktop" if one has to select via patterns. Then, patterns. Some desktops have several patterns. Say, base desktop, desktop. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
